Sound is half the movie. Most systems deliver a tenth of it.

Ask people what makes a theater feel like a theater and they say the big screen. Then ask them after their first real surround sound demo. The answer changes. Sound is what makes you duck when something flies overhead. It is what makes a quiet scene tense. Directors mix movies for surround sound — a TV's built-in speakers play maybe a tenth of what is on the soundtrack.

We install surround sound systems that deliver the whole thing: dialogue locked to the screen, effects moving around the room, bass you feel. In new theater rooms, in living rooms, in rooms that already exist — we design the system for your space and calibrate it to your seats.

How surround sound works, simply

Surround sound uses multiple speakers placed around you, each playing different parts of the soundtrack. The front three speakers — left, center, right — carry dialogue and on-screen action. The center speaker is the workhorse: almost all dialogue comes from it, which is why a good center channel makes voices clear even in loud scenes.

Surround speakers to the sides and behind you carry the environment — rain, crowds, the spaceship flying past. The subwoofer handles bass: explosions, engines, the low rumble of a score. A system is named by its speaker count: 5.1 means five speakers plus one subwoofer. 7.1 adds two more surrounds. Dolby Atmos adds overhead speakers — 5.1.2 means five speakers, one sub, two overheads — and that height layer is what makes rain actually sound like it is falling on you.

Dolby Atmos: the real deal

Atmos changed home theater more than anything in the last decade. Older surround sound assigned sounds to specific speakers. Atmos treats sounds as objects moving through 3D space — a helicopter does not just pan from left to right, it passes overhead. The effect is uncanny when it is set up right.

Atmos needs overhead speakers — either in the ceiling or special upward-firing modules that bounce sound off the ceiling. In-ceiling speakers are the real thing and what we recommend when the room allows it. We place them precisely, because overhead effects only work when the angles are right.

Speaker types: in-wall, on-wall, freestanding

In-wall and in-ceiling speakers disappear into the room — you hear them, you do not see them. They are the cleanest look and what we recommend for dedicated theaters and clean media rooms. They need wall or ceiling access for installation, which we handle.

On-wall speakers mount flat against the wall — nearly as clean, easier to install, and easier to upgrade later. Freestanding (bookshelf or tower) speakers sit on stands or the floor — the best sound per dollar, but they take up space and show. Each has a place; we recommend based on your room, your look, and your budget.

The subwoofer deserves its own mention. Bass is the most room-dependent part of sound — the same subwoofer sounds boomy in one spot and thin in another. We place the subwoofer by testing, not guessing, and we tune it so bass is powerful but tight. One great subwoofer beats two mediocre ones.

Calibration: where systems are won or lost

Here is the truth most installers will not tell you: a $3,000 speaker system set up wrong loses to a $1,000 system set up right. Placement, levels, distances, crossover settings, room correction — these decide what you actually hear.

We calibrate every system with a measurement microphone at your actual seats. We set each speaker's level and timing so sound arrives at your ears correctly. We run room correction to tame the room's acoustic quirks. We tune the subwoofer to blend seamlessly — bass you feel, not bass that announces itself. This is included in every install. It is not optional and we do not skip it.

Upgrading what you have

Already have a surround system that underwhelms? We do upgrades and rescues. Common fixes: repositioning speakers that were placed for looks instead of sound, replacing a weak center channel (the number one dialogue clarity upgrade), adding a real subwoofer, adding Atmos overheads to an existing 5.1 system, and proper calibration of systems that were never tuned. Sometimes the gear is fine and the setup is the problem — we diagnose honestly.

The wiring: your system's invisible backbone

Every surround system we install is wired — not wireless. Here is why: wireless speakers compress the audio, add delay, and drop out at the worst moments. Wired speakers get the full signal, perfectly in sync, forever. The wire is also the cheapest part of the system and the hardest to add later — which is why we run more wire than you need today.

We run speaker wire through walls, ceilings, and attics to each speaker location, plus extras for future upgrades — wire for Atmos overheads even if you are starting with 5.1, wire for a second subwoofer location, conduit to the projector spot. Future-you will thank present-you. The wire is invisible once the drywall is patched and painted.

For rooms where wiring is genuinely impossible, we design hybrid systems: wired where we can, quality wireless where we must. But wired is the default, always.

Great for music, not just movies

A good surround system is also a great music system. Modern receivers play stereo music beautifully through the front speakers, and many streaming services now offer surround and spatial audio mixes. A well-set-up 5.1 system playing a concert Blu-ray or a spatial audio album is a different experience from earbuds — it is the closest thing to being in the room.

We set up a dedicated music listening mode during calibration: proper stereo imaging, subwoofer blended for music (tighter than movie bass), and easy access from the same remote. Movie night and music night, one system.

Our process

We visit, listen to your room, and talk about what you watch and how loud you like it. You get a written estimate with the speaker layout drawn for your room. We install — running wire through walls and ceilings, mounting or cutting in speakers, placing the subwoofer by measurement. We calibrate to your seats. Then we play the demo scenes and watch your face. That part never gets old.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos?

5.1 is five speakers plus a subwoofer — the classic surround setup. 7.1 adds two more surround speakers for a fuller wrap-around effect. Dolby Atmos adds overhead speakers for height — sound above you, not just around you. Our surround sound formats guide explains each in plain language.

Can I hear dialogue clearly with surround sound?

Yes — clearer than with TV speakers, when it is set up right. Almost all dialogue comes from the center channel speaker, and a good center channel plus proper calibration makes voices crisp even during loud action. If you currently struggle to hear dialogue, a proper center channel is the fix.

Do speakers have to be big and ugly?

No. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers are invisible — painted to match, you literally cannot see them. On-wall speakers are slim and discreet. Only freestanding tower speakers make a visual statement, and even those come in furniture-grade finishes now.

Can you add surround sound to a room that is already finished?

Yes. We run wires through walls, ceilings, and attics every day — that is the core skill of this trade. In rooms where wire runs are truly impossible, we design around it with on-wall speakers and wireless subwoofer options. We assess honestly during the visit.

Is Dolby Atmos worth it?

For movie lovers, yes — it is the biggest leap in home sound in years. The overhead effects on a well-mixed Atmos movie are startling. It needs ceiling speakers (or upward-firing modules) and Atmos content, which most new movies and streaming originals now include.

Why does my current surround system sound bad?

Usually one of three things: speakers placed for looks instead of sound, a weak or missing center channel, or a system that was never calibrated. We diagnose existing systems — sometimes the fix is repositioning and calibration, not new gear.
