The honest answer: it depends on four things
Anyone who quotes you a home theater price without seeing your room is guessing. Real pricing depends on four things: the room (size, shape, light, construction), the screen (TV size or projector plus screen), the sound (how many speakers, what quality), and the finish level (basic clean install versus full acoustic treatment and smart control).
A simple media room upgrade — TV mount, sound system, hidden wires, programmed remote — is the most accessible entry point. A mid-range dedicated theater with projection, surround sound, and seating is a serious project. A no-compromise cinema room with acoustic treatment, Atmos, and automation is a luxury build. All three can be fantastic — they are just different rooms.
Where the money goes
Roughly speaking, the equipment is about half to two-thirds of a project, and labor, wiring, and calibration are the rest. Within equipment, speakers and the display matter most — they are what you see and hear. This is where we focus budgets: a dollar in speakers beats a dollar in fancy cables every time.
Labor is not just "hanging a TV." It is wire runs through finished walls, precise speaker placement, projector alignment, acoustic planning, and calibration with measurement gear. The install quality decides whether good equipment performs — which is why the cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest outcome.
How to spend wisely
Start with the room's needs, not a shopping list. Get the screen size right for the seating distance. Buy speakers matched to the room size. Do not skip calibration — it is included in our installs because it matters that much. And wire for the future during the first install: the wire is cheap now and expensive later.
Consider phasing. Build the core theater now — screen, sound, seating — and add Atmos overheads, acoustic treatment upgrades, or smart lighting later. We design every project with an upgrade path, so phase one never wastes money.
